Helping Hosts Create More Thoughtful Stays

Kristen, founder of The Thoughtful Stay

Hi, I’m Kristen—the person behind The Thoughtful Stay.

I’m a vacation rental owner, co-owner of a vacation rental management company, CPA, wife, mom of two, and dog owner (three, actually). I also happen to be the person who notices when a kitchen is missing a can opener, wonders whether the towels will hold up after repeated washes, and reorganizes an owner closet because there has to be a better way.

I created The Thoughtful Stay to share the practical lessons I’ve learned from owning, managing, stocking, and continually improving vacation rentals.

This site is not about creating a picture-perfect rental or buying every product someone puts on a list. It is about creating a home that feels welcoming to guests, works well for the people managing it, and makes financial sense for the owner.

How The Thoughtful Stay Began

I have always enjoyed creating spaces where people feel comfortable and cared for. But vacation rentals taught me that a thoughtful stay is about much more than decorating.

It is making sure guests can find what they need without sending a message. It is choosing bedding that feels good but can also survive frequent turnovers. It is stocking enough dishes for the guest count without overflowing the cabinets. It is leaving the little extras that make people feel welcome—while skipping the ones that create clutter, waste, or more work.

Over time, I found myself constantly making notes:

What did guests ask for?

What did cleaners struggle with?

What needed to be replaced too soon?

What was worth spending more on?

What looked great online but did not work well in an actual rental?

The Thoughtful Stay grew out of those questions.

The Experience Behind the Advice

I own and operate vacation rentals and co-own a vacation rental management company, so I see the full picture behind a guest stay.

I am involved in the less glamorous parts too: turnovers, restocking, maintenance, owner expenses, guest questions, damaged items, missing supplies, and products that do not hold up as well as expected.

My CPA background also influences how I approach hosting. I naturally think about organization, efficiency, cost, and long-term value. I want guests to have a wonderful experience, but I do not believe owners need to overspend or fill every drawer and cabinet to make that happen.

My goal is to help you spend thoughtfully, set up practical systems, and focus on the details that truly make a difference.

What I Consider Before Recommending Something

Before I recommend a product, amenity, or hosting system, I usually ask:

  • Will it improve the guest experience?
  • Will it hold up through regular use and repeated turnovers?
  • Will it make the property easier to clean, restock, or manage?
  • Is it worth the cost?

The recommendations on this site come from products I use, ideas that have worked in homes we manage, recurring guest and housekeeping needs, and lessons learned through real stays and turnovers.

I also try to be honest about what is essential, what is simply nice to have, and what you can probably skip.

Some pages include affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you purchase through one of those links, at no additional cost to you. But I will never recommend something simply because it has an affiliate link. I would rather help you avoid an unnecessary purchase than encourage you to buy something your rental does not need.

A Little More About Me

Outside of vacation rentals, I’m a wife and mom of two, and family life shapes a lot of how I think about hospitality.

I know what it is like to arrive somewhere tired, hungry, or traveling with different ages and personalities. I notice the practical things that make a stay easier: enough places to sit, a kitchen that actually functions, comfortable bedding, clear instructions, and a home that feels welcoming without feeling too precious to enjoy.

I also love discovering ideas, products, and systems that make everyday life run a little more smoothly. The Thoughtful Stay gives me a place to share the ones that have genuinely helped us in our own rentals and the properties we help manage.
